From 1968 to 1972, the SOQUIL visual arts awards were issued by AICA by a regular jury made up of José Augusto França, Rui Mário Gonçalves and Fernando Pernes, who awarded the best exhibitions hosted in Lisbon only.

Having had a hiatus of eight years, the award was resumed in 1981 by the then called Visual Arts Division of the Directorate for Cultural Action / SEC (Department for Culture), and it then started considering the entire country. Since then, AICA’s Portuguese Section annually chooses a visual artist and an architect who it deems worthy of a national award, which is funded by the Ministry of Culture.

The AICA/MC (Ministry of Culture) Awards for Visual Arts and Architecture are issued to two people in those respective areas whose career trajectory is considered relevant by the critics, and whose work was particularly in focus on the year the award is being issued.

De 1968 a 1972, a AICA atribuiu os prémios SOQUIL de artes plásticas, através de um júri fixo constituído por José Augusto França, Rui Mário Gonçalves e Fernando Pernes que premiou as melhores exposições realizadas em Lisboa.

Interrompido durante oito anos, o prémio “regressou”, em 1981, por iniciativa da então Divisão de Artes Plásticas da Direcção-Geral da Acção Cultural / SEC (Secretaria de Estado da Cultura), passando a considerar todo o país.
Desde então, a Secção Portuguesa da AICA escolhe anualmente um artista plástico e um arquitecto merecedores de um prémio nacional, cujo quantitativo é oferecido pela Secretaria de Estado da Cultura, a que se juntou em 2012 a Fundação Millennium bcp.

Os prémios de Artes Visuais e Arquitectura são atribuídos a duas personalidades das respectivas áreas, cujo percurso profissional seja considerado relevante pela crítica e cujo trabalho tenha estado particularmente em foco, no ano a que o Prémio diz respeito.

A Associação Internacional de Críticos de Arte/Secção Portuguesa (AICA/SP) e a fundação carmona e costa promovem um prémio de crítica de arte e arquitetura, no valor de 10.000,00, que tem lugar de dois em dois anos, reportando-se à produção publicada no biénio anterior de obras inéditas escritas em língua portuguesa e publicadas originalmente em Portugal.

A Secção Portuguesa da Associação Internacional de Críticos de Arte (SP/AICA) e a fundação carmona e costa promoveram um prémio de crítica e ensaística de arte e arquitetura, no valor de 10.000,00, que teve lugar de dois em dois anos, entre 2013 e 2017, reportando-se à produção publicada no biénio anterior de obras inéditas, escritas em língua portuguesa e publicadas originalmente em Portugal.

Candidates are elected by their peers through secret ballot. To be eligible, you must prove regular activity in the last three years, in one or more of the following areas:


- Press, broadcast on radio, TV, video or electronic media;
- Publication of works of art history, aesthetics or criticism;
- Higher education in art, history or art criticism, aesthetics or curatorship;
- Curatorial or analytical work for educational purposes, including the production of educational or critical texts for museums or galleries, whose main objective is not exclusively commercial.




The application for membership must be sent by letter or email to the president of the national section, including a statement of motivation and an updated curriculum vitae.
Applications for membership are evaluated at the Annual General Meeting held at the beginning of each year.
